Auto-Renewal Troubleshooting Checklist

Auto-Renewal Troubleshooting Checklist

If your membership didn't renew as expected, it’s usually down to one of these common "gremlins" in the system:

1. The "Expired Card" Catch

  • The Issue: You’ve received a new credit card with a new expiration date or CVV, but the old one is still saved in Elevent.
  • The Fix: Head to your Billing Information tab (as we covered earlier) and ensure the card details match your current physical card exactly.

2. The "Billing Address" Mismatch

  • The Issue: Banks are picky. If you’ve moved recently and haven't updated your address in Elevent, the bank may decline the "pre-authorization" check.
  • The Fix: Update your Billing Address in your account settings to match the address on your bank statement.

3. The "Manual Only" Restriction

  • The Issue: Not all memberships are eligible for auto-renew. Some event organizers require you to manually "opt-in" or choose a specific tier each year.
  • The Fix: Check your Your Memberships page. If you only see a "Renew" button and no "Auto-Renew" toggle, you’ll need to process the renewal manually this time.

4. Bank Fraud Alerts

  • The Issue: If your membership is from an international organization or is a significantly larger amount than your usual spending, your bank might "freeze" the transaction for your protection.
  • The Fix: Look for a text or email from your bank asking you to "confirm this purchase." Once you confirm, you may need to click Enable Auto Renewal again in Elevent to re-trigger the process.

5. Insufficient Funds / Credit Limit

  • The Issue: It happens to the best of us! If the charge exceeds your available balance or credit limit at the moment of the attempt, it will fail.
  • The Fix: Ensure the funds are available 2–5 days before your "Valid To" date, as that is when the system typically begins the renewal attempt.

Pro-Tip: If your renewal fails, Elevent will usually send you an automated "Payment Failed" email. Don't ignore it! You generally have a small grace period (often until the expiration date) to fix your payment info before your membership benefits are cut off.
